Good Leaders Make Sure the Meeting Is Worth Everyone’s Time

Do you really need to be there? Will anyone miss you if you stay away? Is this meeting really worth your valuable time? These are questions you should be asking yourself every time you receive a meeting invitation.

One of the most important skills you learn in leadership training is how to prioritize your time. There is far too little to waste. Here are some tips on how keep on top of what is decided at meetings even if you do not plan on attending:

  • Before
Review the planned agenda ahead of time. Then you can assess what topics are of value to you or need your input.
  • During
Send someone from your team in your stead. If you have comments to share, have your surrogate make them on your behalf and then bring you a report on reactions and subsequent discussion. There may be some follow-up needed either at the next meeting or by email.
  • After
Request meeting notes with action items, the people responsible for the actions and the time line so you can keep abreast of anything that concerns you and your team.
