4 Steps to Becoming an Outstanding Leader

On a blackboard 3 steps upward show how to make things better

Leadership training programs help you see what you need to learn and practice to be a good, capable, and effective leader. We’d like to take it a step further. We’d like to show how you can be not only good, but the best; not only capable, but extraordinarily skilled; not only effective, but truly impressive.

Here are four traits of good leaders and the steps you can take to be outstanding:

1. Good leaders clearly communicate company goals.
But great leaders know how to translate and cascade those far-reaching strategies into meaningful goals that teams and individuals can relate to and identify with. They understand the strengths and talents of each member of their team. They match tasks to individuals accordingly. Team members then feel a sense of personal, not just professional, purpose.

2. Good leaders accept mistakes as part of the learning process.
But great leaders know how to give feedback without assigning blame and how to help employees figure out how to correct their own mistakes. Rather than charging in and fixing things themselves, exceptional leaders are understanding and patient enough for employees to learn how to do better next time.

3. Good leaders support their team.
But great leaders really have their team’s back even when it means taking the blame themselves. They instinctively know that it is the right thing to do. Employees will be forever grateful and loyal to bosses they know will cover for them.

4. Good leaders set clear performance expectations.
Great leaders not only deal with actions and behaviors but they also deal with feelings. They care about the members of their team and work to understand what motivates and drives each one. So they are ready to solve performance problems not just from the point of view of what went wrong but to understand why an employee acted in a certain way.
