Taking Your Spot at the Head of the Line

Two important leadership competencies are often overlooked.

There are multiple studies on what it takes to be a leader. But there are two essential ingredients of a successful leader that are often overlooked as the discussions usually center on effective communication. One is passion and the other is leading by example.

If you want to take your spot at the head of the line, you have to really want to be there and passionately believe in what you are doing. Whether it be a cause or a product, to lead you need to project your dedication to the project in order to inspire others to follow.

Then when others line up behind you, your conduct will show them what you expect of their behavior. You want commitment? Show commitment. You want open, clear communication? Be transparent and specific in your interactions. You want collaborative teams? Be ready to help out and support others as needed.
