Tips to Lead Successful Change

The path of change is fraught with peril.

No leader wants to be counted in the majority when the success of change initiatives is measured…because most fail. How can you be in the minority of leaders who has been able to lead their organization through change successfully?

Here are the tips from leadership training program participants who have succeeded:

  • Do not be the only one who understands why change is necessary. You need to be able to articulate the reasons and persuade all involved—from senior management to individual contributors—that change is in everyone’s best interest.
  • The entire workforce needs to understand all the particulars: who will be responsible, when milestones are due, and how it will be managed.
  • Invite participation…through open discussions, in the actual planning, and reports of progress. The more involved employees are in the process, the more they will support the plan.
  • Stay nimble. The unexpected is bound to occur. Be ready to adjust the plan as needed to maintain momentum.

The secret of successfully leading change is good two-way communication, the ability to inspire cooperation and the flexibility to course correct as needed.
