Most of us find ourselves at various times in our lives
in two opposite roles—as followers and as leaders. Interestingly, there are
some traits that span the roles, common traits that make you better at both.
Leadership training programs highlight the following aspects of good leaders, but they are the same traits that make you good
followers.
- Understanding the needs of others. Good leaders and followers are aware of and accommodate what drives others on their team.
- Knowing how to work well with others. Collaboration is critical to both leading and following well. Teamwork is what matters and leads to success.
- Thinking independently. Critical thinking helps both leaders and followers.
- Acting with courage. Be strong enough to do what is right as either a leader or follower. It may not be the most popular route, but it will be the right one and integrity is what wins in the end.
- Knowing when to be diplomatic. Diversity on teams is an advantage but it may take a high degree of tact to maneuver around differences for followers as well as for leaders.
