Leadership and What to Do When There Is an Elephant in the Room

How are you going to achieve the objectives of your meeting if there is an elephant in the room? Everyone is distracted, uncomfortable and close-mouthed. No one is willing to raise the issue. So you as leader need to do it!

The difficult conversation needs to take place so the team can move forward and get back to important and productive work. Follow the advice of leadership training programs that suggest you raise the subject and then seek more detail from your team members. Is this a new problem or has it been around a long time? Who does it affect?

Welcome all points of view and encourage the team to speak openly and directly but with respect. Behind-the-scene discussions do not belong on a high performance team that needs to work collaboratively. Emphasize that nothing should be held back now that the subject is up for discussion. You want to solve this problem once and for all. Reassure your team that there will be no repercussions for speaking honestly. Then, get that issue resolved!
