No, we are not going to tell you how to grab the limelight and get the applause. But we do have a simple, though somewhat counter-intuitive, tip for feeling appreciated in life and on the job. It is showing and expressing your appreciation for others. As easy and straightforward as that!
If you are feeling underappreciated, try articulating your appreciation for someone in your circle. Research in the social sciences has established that, if you communicate honest and sincere gratitude for what someone else has done, you will generate positive emotions that are bound to reflect well on you.
This giving-credit-where-it’s-due should become part of an organization’s culture. It is the step in leadership training programs where leaders are reminded to recognize the achievements of their employees…not necessarily in “hard” ways but in “soft” ways. A note of thanks for extra effort or a salute at a team meeting or a mention in the company newsletter…these are the ways to encourage an appreciation culture where everyone will benefit from the positive vibes.
It should not be just about you; nor are you in a competition to grab credit. Express your appreciation of others and watch what happens. Appreciation will come back to you. And if there have been any negative feelings around under appreciation, you will open up the atmosphere for real work to begin.
